Year End 2020: The Indies

Independents organize in a fight for their survival No aspect of the live industry was hit harder by the coronavirus pandemic than venues themselves. While artists and other members of the live ecosystem have partly offset lost touring revenue with livestreams and other new content, venues saw income halt suddenly and almost completely in mid-March, when most public gatherings were banned under sweeping health restrictions. Initially, the live business stayed afloat with meager government aid and charitable efforts – but relief has long since dried up, with lawmakers failing repeatedly in recent months to pass additional legislation to bail out the live industry and other sectors impacted by the pandemic. But as the months dragged on, the National Independent Venue Association has provided a beacon of hope during challenging times for venues across the country. More than 2,900 independent venues have banded together since NIVA formed in the pandemic’s early… Continue Reading Year End 2020: The Indies

Logjammed: Montana’s Hottest Promoter Plots Comeback

The KettleHouse Brewing Co. (red building) and KettleHouse Amphitheater in Bonner, Mont. (Getty Images) Nick Checota has quickly become one of the key figures of Montana’s entertainment industry. The promoter and venue operator, a journeyman who worked in finance, consulting, and real estate before heading west about a decade ago, founded Logjam Presents in 2016, where he oversees a modest Big Sky Country empire that includes the 550-capacity Top Hat, the 4,500-capacity KettleHouse Amphitheater, and more. In keeping with his prominent status, when Checota connects with VenuesNow on a mid-December morning, he’s just getting off another call – with Montana Senator John Tester (D), as the Senate weighs including the live events industry in pandemic relief legislation before adjourning for the holidays. “The nice thing about Montana is we still have access to our leaders, unlike places like California,” he wryly jokes. “If we want to talk to our senator… Continue Reading Logjammed: Montana’s Hottest Promoter Plots Comeback

Trey Anastasio’s Beacon Theatre Memories

TREY COOL: Fresh off his eight-show virtual residency at New York’s Beacon Theatre, Trey Anastasio has released a mini-documentary chronicling the gigs. (Angela Cranford) Mini-documentary shines a light on eight-week residency Phish’s Trey Anastasio brightened Friday evenings for fans in October and November with “The Beacon Jams,” an eight-week virtual residency livestreamed from Manhattan’s Beacon Theatre. Now, fans can relive the shows — and get a peek behind the curtain — with “What Calls You Home,” a 16-minute mini-documentary released Dec. 10 chronicling the gigs. “‘Beacon,’ if you look it up in the dictionary, is a beam of light that is sent out to a sailor who is lost at sea,” Anastasio says in the clip. “My head blew up when I thought of that. It was like, ‘Oh, my God, that’s exactly what this is, but sonically.’ Everybody’s lost at sea. They’re out in the fog. A beacon is… Continue Reading Trey Anastasio’s Beacon Theatre Memories
