A group headed by Black Entertainment Television (BET) founder Robert Johnson of Washington, D.C., was awarded the expansion National Basketball Assn. franchise that begins play for the 2004-5 season in Charlotte, N.C. The league expansion committee made the announcement Dec. 17. Johnson is the only African-American majority owner of a major league team. The expansion fee is set at $300 million.
