A criminal background check on a potential employee can be done for $35, a fee that is well worth the investment to weed out troublesome candidates, according to providers of the latest Internet-based screening services.

"It costs [an employer] about $800,000 per violent act, so 35 bucks is a pretty low cost if you prevent that," said Kim Kerr, director of market planning for LexisNexis Screening Solutions.
