Kim Bedier, director of Tacoma Venues & Events for the city of Tacoma How did you do last year? 2019 was an amazing year. Our big arena in Seattle is under renovation, so we picked up business we wouldn’t have had otherwise. As a result, we had a very strong year. Big shows We go from one show to the next, so we’re only as good as our last event. One highlight was Michelle Obama, who was amazing. Jimmy Kimmel interviewed her, and no one moved the entire time. We’ve had great concerts, too. The standouts were ELO and Queen. Post Malone did rehearsals here, and he was so appreciative of… Continue Reading Pacific Northwest: High Season

‘There Was Nobody Like Him’

Figure skating legend Michelle Kwan on Tom Collins How did you meet Tom Collins? I believe I met Tom at a competition when I was 12 years old. I remember being in complete awe of him because he was the owner of the skating show that I admired so much.  What did you like most about working with him? It was an amazing experience performing on Champions on Ice. Tommy took care of all the skaters like they were his kids. When we traveled to perform, he made sure that we had the nicest rooms, most comfortable buses — it was like one big happy family on a long skating road trip around the country.  What was his impact on your career in skating? I’ll be forever grateful for the opportunities that Tommy provided me. I traveled on Champions on Ice when I was only 13 years old. During that… Continue Reading ‘There Was Nobody Like Him’

(Champions on Ice) Champions on Ice founder ‘had an impact on everyone he met’ Kenneth Feld and Tom Collins were much younger men when they met — “This was before I was even working part time,” recalled Feld, CEO of Feld Entertainment — but the years seemed to change little. “I can’t believe he was 88,” Feld said. “I always felt like he was a young, vibrant person who had so much positive energy and was one of the friendliest people I knew.” Collins died Sept. 1 of natural causes surrounded by his family at his Edina, Minn., home. Born in the small Canadian mining town of Kirkland Lake, Ontario, in 1931, Collins left school in eighth grade to work with his father… Continue Reading In Memoriam: Tom Collins 1931-2019
