Durability a Priority in Restroom Refurbs

The $8.5 million project at Oncenter War Memorial Arena included new dividers for the venue’s 12 restrooms. (Courtesy Scranton Products) Makeovers at Syracuse arena holding up well — and in team colors The recent $8.5 million transformation of the Oncenter War Memorial Arena in Syracuse, N.Y., covered everything from new luxury boxes to updated videoboards and fresh Ephesus lighting. Those additions to the 6,230-seat multipurpose arena, home to the Syracuse Crunch of the American Hockey League are the most visible, but the upgrades touch on nearly every aspect of the venue, right down to the partitions in the restrooms.  The updates, completed a year ago at the now 61-year-old arena, remade what was one of only two NHL or AHL hockey arenas without box suites and VIP experiences. They also included a new high-definition scoreboard and full 360-degree ribbon boards, fresh lighting a digital marquee, new seating with the Crunch… Continue Reading Durability a Priority in Restroom Refurbs

Longhorns Celebrate History With New Hall

A 1,200-pound longhorn statues provides a photo background at the Frank Denius Family University of Texas Athletics Hall of Fame. (Courtesy University of Texas) Addition to University of Texas stadium collects school’s athletic glory in one place The 8-foot-tall, 1,200-pound longhorn statue poised at the entrance to the new Frank Denius Family University of Texas Athletics Hall of Fame leaves no doubt about the purpose of the space: to celebrate all things Texas athletics.  “You immediately know where you are and that it’s a really big deal,” said Chris Del Conte, University of Texas vice president and director of athletics.  Texas gutted a nearly 25,000-square-foot food court in the on-campus Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium to make room for the new hall of fame, which also required raising $17.1 million to make happen. Moving into the stadium was the perfect location.  “It’s the front porch to our athletics department that… Continue Reading Longhorns Celebrate History With New Hall

Towering Achievement

A $315 million renovation modernized the historic home of University of Southern California football. (Courtesy USC) Seven-story addition completes overhaul of Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum  The historic nature of the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, built in 1923, gave the venue a legendary status. It still lacked many of the amenities expected in a modern facility, however, until it underwent a $315 million renovation that touched nearly every aspect of the stadium and reopened in August.  The work extended throughout the stadium, from installing new seats to adding Wi-Fi to building the 3,000-capacity, seven-story Scholarship Club Tower tucked into the historic bowl. The new 235,000-square-foot addition, which includes 42 luxury suites, a multilevel club space and a 500-capacity rooftop deck and replaces an outdated two-story press box, brought with it tricky engineering challenges created by working within a nearly 100-year-old concrete structure. But the effort was worth the value it added for… Continue Reading Towering Achievement

(Courtesy Portland Trail Blazers) Preseason game in Veterans Memorial Coliseum kicks off 50th anniversary celebration Portland’s Veterans Memorial Coliseum will once again fill with all things Trail Blazers as the NBA franchise moves into the venue across the plaza from its Moda Center home to kick off its preseason schedule on Oct. 8, the first step in a seasonlong celebration of the team’s 50th anniversary.  The Blazers, which started play in Memorial Coliseum and used it as home until 1995, winning the team’s lone NBA championship in the building in 1977, will make the first return to the building in a decade. While the venue has remained in operation since the Blazers moved across the Rose Quarter campus, only one other Blazers game, during the preseason of the team’s 40th anniversary, has taken place in Memorial Coliseum since 1995. … Continue Reading Trail Blazers Returning to Old Home for a Night

Cleveland’s ‘Postcard Building’ Transforms City

A rendering of the renovated Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse, courtesy of the arena. Cleveland’s Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse will give fans plenty more than just a new name for the 26th year of the building. After a few months of a complete shutdown, the final phase of the $185 million renovation to the city’s largest arena has its grand opening slated for Sept. 28 with a completely reimagined exterior and space aplenty in the remade concourses.  Home of the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers, AHL’s Cleveland Monsters and over 200 ticketed events annually, the publicly owned building operated by the Cavs underwent a phase one enhancement a year ago, mainly remaking and enhancing the premium spaces within the building. This year, though, came the heavy lifting required to complete phase two, focused on the main public areas. The Cavs added 55,000 square feet to the building, now a total of 153,000 square feet; created… Continue Reading Cleveland’s ‘Postcard Building’ Transforms City
