Year End 2020: Charts and Analysis

HEAT CHECK: A security officer checks the temperature of a fan at the Vive Latino festival March 14 at Foro Sol in Mexico City, one of 2020’s highest-grossing events. (Getty Images) Change of Course Promising start to 2020 no match for the pandemic In the early weeks of 2020, live entertainment seemed to be poised for an extraordinary year with first-quarter ticket revenue showing slight increases over the same period a year earlier. Box-office tallies from concerts and live events in 2019 ultimately topped $11 billion globally, so optimism was high with hopes for a record-setting year, perhaps even reaching $12 billion. The onset of the pandemic in March charted a very different course for 2020. At the end of the challenging year, final worldwide gross figures from reported events totaled about $2.5 billion, less than a quarter of what occurred the previous year. YEAR END CHARTS:    HOT TICKETS — […]

Roll With the Punches: The Alamodome Brings on the Fight

On Halloween night, San Antonio’s Alamodome welcomed boxing fans inside for the first “Fight Night” since the shutdown of live entertainment eight months ago. Four bouts were featured, including the main event with Gervonta Davis facing Leo Santa Cruz for both the World Boxing Association lightweight and super featherweight titles, a rarity in boxing where titles in two weight classes are on the line. Davis was ultimately the winner with a knockout victory in the sixth round. The Premier Boxing Champions event drew a crowd of 9,024 at the stadium, which had instituted social distancing precautions and lowered the number of tickets available for purchase due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The fights produced a gross of $1,451,475 to earn the No. 1 ranking on this month’s Hot Tickets chart. The event was also made available on Showtime pay-per-view.   Hot Tickets: December 2020

Q3 2020: Same As It Ever Was (Sort Of)

RHAPSODIC: Queen + Adam Lambert perform Feb. 13 at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane, Australia. (Getty Images) Charts largely static, but a few shows enter the rankings   2020 Q3 Hot Tickets | 2020 Q3 Top Stops | 2020 Q3 Top Stops North America Analyzing the state of the live entertainment industry for third quarter recaps sounds like an impossible task since the bulk of the live business is either nonexistent or scaled back considerably compared with previous years. But since our analysis is based on shows that occurred from the beginning of the chart year (Nov. 21, 2019) through the end of Q3 (Aug. 19, 2020) and not just during the third-quarter period, we are still able to create our standard Hot Tickets and Top Stops rankings. It does mean that all of the events appearing on the charts happened before the March 15 industry shutdown, because grosses and ticket counts from […]

An Arena Horns In on the Drive-Ins

LIVE! ROUNDUP On a Hot Tickets chart dominated by outdoor drive-in performances, the sole indoor arena event leads the pack with the highest gross among reported shows during July. The socially distanced engagement featuring contestants on the Spanish televised talent competition “Operación Triunfo” is No. 1 with a box office take of $246,187. Madrid’s WiZink Center hosted the event, attended by 4,690 fans with two shows each July 25 and 26. The 2020 edition of the competition marked the show’s 11th season and kicked off Jan. 12. Even though the coronavirus pandemic forced delays in scheduling and ultimately virtual participation, the season finale aired June 10. Finalists from the show, appeared at the live event in Madrid. Ranked second on Hot Tickets is the top grosser among the drive-in shows, a three-night event staged in the City National Grove of Anaheim’s parking lot. Live! Roundup: A New Normal for Now

With the North American public eager for live entertainment in this pandemic-stricken year, artists, promoters and other concert industry professionals have had to look outside the box to create opportunities for live performing. The most prominent avenue for staging a live show this summer has been the drive-in concert. This month we are able to provide a Hot Tickets chart with the 20 highest-grossing concerts that occurred during the August issue’s reporting period (June 1-30), and 14 of those were staged either in actual drive-in theaters or venue parking lots with an audience watching the show from their own cars. Comedian Bert Kreischer scores the three highest grosses on the chart with June shows from his “Hot Summer Nights” drive-in tour. His top-ranked event was a two-show stint in Indianapolis at Tibbs Drive-In with box-office sales of $143,401. Attendance there totaled 2,842 on June 26. In most drive-in situations, ticket […]
