Not Done Yet in 2023, Inglewood Icon Sets Sights on ’24
Having two NFL teams calling SoFi Stadium home makes for a busy football season for the $5.5 billion Inglewood icon, but beyond the gridiron the venue is closing out a record year that featured the College Football playoff National Championship game, Wrestlemania, Rolling Loud festival, six nights of Taylor Swift, three of Beyoncé and that’s just part of the story.
“We hosted at SoFi stadium a record 19 concerts, and that included music of all genres,” said Christy Castillo Butcher, senior vice president of programming and booking, SoFi Stadium, YouTube Theater and Hollywood Park. “We had our Latin superstars Grupo Firme in May and they were the first artists to return for consecutive years at the stadium and hold the record for the highest selling Latin bands or artists.”
That was followed in June with K-pop girl band Twice, the first all-female group to sell out the stadium.
“And of course, we had our unprecedented six show mini-residency by Taylor Swift,” Castillo Butcher said. “It was the most shows (at one stop) on her U.S. tour, I would say breaking all our venue records for attendance, merchandise, concessions.”
That run was followed by another superstar, Beyoncé, who sold out three shows,” Castillo Butcher said, adding that the final Beyoncé show at SoFi was on Queen Bey’s birthday, Sept. 4.
“Then, on the fourth, we had Ed Sheeran, who also broke a record for the highest single-show attendance with over 81,000 fans,” Castillo Butcher said. “These are all record breakers, and we also had Travis Scott, which was our last concert of the calendar year and first rapper to fill up the stadium. So, a lot of of record-breaking moments this past year.
“We kicked off the year with our college football playoff in January, and then January 23 we had WrestleMania 39. And that was the highest-attended event at SoFi Stadium. It had a gate of more than $21.6 million and an attendance of over 161,000 people over two nights.”
Outside of the stadium on the greater Hollywood Park campus, SoFi held its first first festival: Rolling Loud.
“They sold out three days and they had 60,000 fans each day,” Castillo Butcher said.
The stadium also hosted soccer matches: the CONCACAF Gold Cup and an Arsenal vs FC Barcelona tilt.
For 2024, the stadium already has 10 concerts booked and Castillo Butcher says they are just getting started.
“We announced one Rolling Stones date and we rolled into a second, so I do see the momentum continuing,” she said.
