Teams Add Touchless to Stadium Plans

HELLO, COLUMBUS: MLS Cup 2020 champions the Columbus Crew open a new stadium this year with ample concourse space. (Gerardo Prado) Coming out of COVID-19, the newest generation of Major League Soccer stadiums will feature contactless and cashless operations in ticketing, food service and restrooms, according to teams building those facilities.  In most cases, design tweaks have been made to blueprints to address upgraded safety and sanitization protocols. Austin FC, for example, has gone from 80% to 100% touchless restroom fixtures by adding automated faucets and toilets, team President Andy Loughnane said. The same is true with FC Cincinnati for going completely touchless in restrooms, said team President Jeff Berding. Amazon’s Chris Roe: Pledge Drive

(Courtesy Seattle Kraken) Head of sustainability for company part of Climate Pledge Arena team Chris Roe is head of energy and sustainable operations for online retail giant Amazon, which acquired naming rights for Climate Pledge Arena, the $1 billion transformation of old KeyArena and future home of the NHL Seattle Kraken. Roe provided an update on the company working with Oak View Group (owner of VenuesNow) to develop the world’s first net zero-carbon sports and entertainment venue. Arizona State signs OVG to run hockey arena

Arizona State University’s new hockey arena, shown here in a rendering, will sit next to Sun Devil Stadium and Desert Financial Arena. (Courtesy ASU) New venue on campus will fill niche in Phoenix market Arizona State University has signed a 30-year deal with OVG Facilities to run a new hockey arena on campus scheduled to open in late 2022, officials with both parties confirmed. The school’s board of regents approved the $115 million project in November, clearing the way for construction to start in January. The arena will also be home to Arizona State wrestling and women’s gymnastics. In addition to a 5,000-seat arena, there’s a second ice sheet for community use attached to the building’s south side. The site is near Sun Devil Stadium and Desert Financial Arena, ASU’s basketball facility. MLS Sponsorships Keep Knapple Hustling

Sacramento will begin MLS play in its new stadium, shown in a rendering, in 2023. (HNTB) Elevate exec selling naming rights for four stadiums, three of them new Naming rights expert Jeff Knapple is going through one of the busiest stretches of his 30-plus years in sports marketing, due in large part to the explosion in Major League Soccer stadium developments. Seven new MLS stadiums are set to open over the next five years, and Knapple, chief partnership officer for Elevate Sports Ventures, is selling naming rights for three of them: Inter Miami CF, Sacramento Republic and St. Louis City SC. In addition, Elevate is selling naming rights for the San Jose Earthquakes’ 5-year-old venue. The 18,000-seat building opened as Avaya Stadium in March 2015 before the technology firm filed for bankruptcy two years later and its name was removed from the building.
