Waggoner Moves to Consulting Role at HOK

(Courtesy Tom Waggoner) Two veteran sports designers laid off because of pandemic The pandemic has again affected sports: Tom Waggoner and Tracy Stearns, two senior principals at HOK and among the most experienced sports architects in the Kansas City design community, have been laid off, company officials confirmed.  The moves came about a month ago and were among about 15 total layoffs at HOK, according to Waggoner. Both architects were senior vice presidents. As part of their separation agreements, they will serve as consultants for the company to help maintain relationships with clients, company officials said. Waggoner and Stearns were part of the old 360 Architecture acquired by HOK in 2015 after HOK returned to developing sports venues. (Courtesy Macon Bacon) Summer league for college players to play ball July 1 The reemergence of live sports will shine on rustic ballparks in the Southeast when the Coastal Plain League, a summer wood-bat league for college baseball players, starts its season July 1 with fans in the stands. The CPL, whose roots date to 1937 in North Carolina, is among the few sports leagues ramping up during the pandemic. It will open its doors to the public with attendance restricted to 50% of capacity. In general, the spotlight could shine even brighter on independent leagues if Major League Baseball owners and players can’t come to an agreement and cancel the 2020 season.
