At NYC Tradition SummerStage, New Canopy Just the Start

The SummerStage makeover, shown in a rendering, began with the need for a canopy that could accommodate modern productions. (Courtesy City Parks Foundation) Improvements at Rumsey Playfield prompt a fresh look at logistics to improve the overall experience for fans Eighteen parks throughout New York City host concerts as part of City Parks Foundation’s SummerStage festival, but the series traces its roots to Central Park, where it made its debut at Naumburg Bandshell in 1986. “SummerStage moved from the bandshell to Rumsey Playfield in 1990 and, although we’ve replaced the stage a couple times, the whole space itself had not been looked at holistically,” City Parks Foundation Executive Director Heather Lubov said. Despite consistently top-tier programming, the venue itself has lagged behind modern standards. But that changes this summer, when Rumsey Playfield reopens its gates and greets fans with a contemporary look and feel. Like many other venues built in the… Continue Reading At NYC Tradition SummerStage, New Canopy Just the Start

(Courtesy BSE) After nearly two years of renovations, Manhattan nightclub has fresh look and feel After a closure of nearly two years, Jay-Z, Patti Smith, Vampire Weekend and more are introducing the revamped Webster Hall to New York audiences this spring. “The venue has had an incredible history, but at the same time, it needed to go through a renovation where we could address some needs both visible and nonvisible so that the venue could be viable on a long-term basis,” said Brett Yormark, CEO of Brooklyn Sports & Entertainment, which jointly operates Webster Hall with AEG Presents regional partner Bowery Presents. Jay-Z relaunched the concert hall with a show April 26. The reopening comes just over two years after BSE and Bowery Presents acquired the venue, situated in Manhattan’s East Village neighborhood, from Lon Ballinger in April 2017. “He… Continue Reading Webster Hall Reopens Its Doors

Why the Plug Was Pulled in New York

(Credit iStock/ grandeduc) After the closing of clubs Cielo and Output, here’s where the city’s electronic music scene may be going next The December shutterings of two vaunted New York clubs, Manhattan’s Cielo and Brooklyn’s Output, rocked the city’s electronic music landscape. Though the two venues had different trajectories — Cielo opened in early 2003, while Output opened a decade later in early 2013 — their dual closures symbolized the end of an era ushered in by Nicolas Matar, who owned Cielo and co-owned Output.   “It was never the intention to close both venues at the same time,” said Benny Soto, who worked closely with Matar as a promoter at both Cielo and Output. “It just kind of worked out that way.” Of the two, Cielo’s closure seemed more natural. Situated in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District, the venue was among the final remnants of the neighborhood’s old guard. “I find it remarkable… Continue Reading Why the Plug Was Pulled in New York
