Industry Weighs In at Exhibitions Day 2019

Travel policy among issues that events pros discuss with legislators About 120 exhibition professionals from more than 60 organizations met with members of Congress at the sixth annual Exhibitions Day on June 4-5 on Capitol Hill in Washington, talking with legislators about policy issues that affect trade shows, conventions and other gatherings. Making the Industry Better

A celebrated and diverse career garners IAVM’s McElravy honor for Mike McGee While working in broadcasting during high school and college, industry veteran Mike McGee had no aspirations of making his mark in this industry. Yet there may be no one more deserving of the International Association of Venue Managers’ Charles A. McElravy Award than McGee, founder of the Houston-based consulting firm Barmac Inc., which has served the industry since 1984. “Before I got into this business, I had aspirations of being in broadcasting,” he said. “I’m blown away by this recognition, since I never envisioned I’d be a recipient of this special award.” McGee will receive the McElravy Award, which recognizes professional, honorary or retired IAVM members who have made the greatest lifetime achievement to the welfare of the association or profession, during IAVM’s 94th annual conference July 21-24 in Chicago. “When you’re a part of an organization as… Continue Reading Making the Industry Better

Women of Influence: Maureen Andersen

Maureen Andersen, president and CEO, INTIX A Magical Career Maureen Andersen is known as an innovator, a mentor and a voice of reason in the ticketing industry One of the moments that helped shape Maureen Andersen’s career happened during her first trip to New York City, when she was 23, “naive, young and excited to be on the Great White Way.” At that time, the president and CEO of the International Ticketing Association was one year into a 23-year stint with the Denver Center for the Performing Arts, where she was director of ticketing services from 1982 to 2005. “We tried to get tickets to “Cats,” which was the biggest hit on Broadway at the time, but it was sold out,” she said. “Then, with all the naiveté of the young, we went over to the Palace Theatre where “La Cage aux Folles” had just started in previews.” After brazenly… Continue Reading Women of Influence: Maureen Andersen

Marquee Attraction

The club extends to a rooftop space that overlooks Peachtree Street. (Caleb Holland / With Agency) Marquee Club presented by Lexus at Atlanta’s Fox Theatre marks successful first year Shelling out $10 million to create the Marquee Club presented by Lexus was an anomaly for Atlanta’s Fox Theatre, which had not seen a capital outlay of this amount since the theater was built in 1929. “That was significant for us,” said Adina Erwin, Fox Theatre’s vice president and chief operating officer. “We’ve done capital improvements of $1 million to $1.5 million over time, but a construction process like this had never been done here before.” With the city’s bevy of entertainment spaces — including Mercedes-Benz Stadium, not 2 years old; newly renovated State Farm Arena; Cobb Energy Center; and the Sandy Springs Performing Arts Center, which opened last year — it can be difficult for a venue in this neck of… Continue Reading Marquee Attraction
