Albany Capital Center Keeps It Practical

(Courtesy Albany Capital Center) A $500,000 project primarily adds space to busy venue Albany Capital Center is about to complete its first renovation project — two years after the convention center opened. The work wasn’t sexy, but it was ultra-practical. “We needed more office space because we needed to hire more people and we needed more storage space,” said Doug McClaine, who has been the general manager of the center since it opened in 2017. “When they planned the convention center in 2015, they had no idea that the building would be so successful.” McClaine and his team quickly figured out after moving in that there was not enough office space for the staff or a good place to store the center’s removable sport floors, which are being stored near the truck dock. “We were already pretty tightly packed into the two office suites… Continue Reading Albany Capital Center Keeps It Practical

Eventbrite names Lanny Baker CFO

Lanny Baker. (Courtesy of Eventbrite) He moves over from same position at Yelp Lanny Baker has been named chief financial officer of Eventbrite. The industry veteran joins the ticketing company from Yelp, where he held the same title. Before joining Yelp, Baker was CEO of ZipRealty and CFO for Monster Worldwide. Baker spent the earlier part of his career as a research analyst covering the internet and media industries. He has also served as a board director for public companies including HomeAway, XO Group and Leaf Group. Baker’s starts on Sept. 3 when former CFO Randy Befumo, who has been in the role since 2016, takes over the chief strategy officer for the ticket firm.

Crowd Control’s Evolution at Mercedes-Benz Stadium

(Courtesy Mercedes-Benz Stadium) Adjustments to security plan at 2-year-old facility began even before it opened Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta will be 2 years old in September. VenuesNow spoke with Joe Coomer, vice president of security for AMB Sports and Entertainment, the entity that runs the stadium, about how crowd control has evolved since the venue opened. Coomer joined the AMB team in the summer of 2015. “The building was only 30% complete when I came on,” he said. “A lot of it was design and concept and not much reality yet. NS2 Promotes Christian, Germano

Olivia Christian and Emma Germano (Courtesy NS2) They’ll fill senior marketing manager, booking coordinator roles National Shows 2 has promoted Olivia Christian to senior marketing manager and Emma Germano to booking coordinator. Christian, who joined NS2 2 1/2 years ago, is responsible for the marketing and advertising of over 150 concerts nationwide annually, as well as all advertising and promotions for NS2’s events at the CMA Theater at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. Christian spearheaded the company’s foray into email marketing and handles PR duties and internal communications for both NS2 and parent company Frank Productions. Christian was marketing manager for the Tennessee Performing Arts Center and War Memorial Auditorium as well as junior account executive at Kaleidoscope Media. Germano was administrative assistant, training for her new role under NS2 President Darin Lashinky, for 1 1/2 years. Metal Detectors Remain Staple of Venue Security

(Courtesy AMB Sports + Entertainment) Use expands beyond major league buildings, as next-gen technology nears its debut  Standing tall, often like a giant wall, are the latest versions of the gold standard in live event ingress security, magnetometers, known as mags in the industry and to the rest of the world as walk-through metal detectors.  The device has a long history. Alexander Graham Bell invented the world’s first metal detector in 1881 after President James Garfield was shot by an assassin and Bell hastily created a makeshift metal detector in an unsuccessful attempt to find the bullet. The first walk-through metal detectors were used in the 1920s to check convicts entering prison for weapons.  It wasn’t until the 1960s that metal detectors began being used commercially, mostly in airports.
