(Courtesy Phoenix Suns) Work continues at Talking Stick Resort Arena on $250M project The transformation of Talking Stick Resort Arena, the home of the NBA’s Phoenix Suns, was slated to begin after a concert by the Eagles on April 26. When COVID-19 swept the world and shut down sports and entertainment, crews were able to start the overhaul early. “With the unfortunate shutdown and postponement of the season and the rest of our events, we were able to start on the work sooner than we anticipated,” said Ralph Marchetta, the arena’s general manager.  “We gained about three weeks. How that factors into the overall length of what we have planned on getting done this summer is going to depend on supply chain disruptions or labor disruptions going forward.” Dubbed Project 201: PHX Reimagined, the transformation is […]

(Courtesy Phoenix Suns) Event-level clubs, entry pavilion changes planned for Talking Stick Resort Arena The Phoenix Suns are transforming Talking Stick Resort Arena with three new event-level clubs, including a much-needed courtside club; a reconfigured entry pavilion; and two corner bars integrated into the seating bowl off the main concourse. In addition, the Suns are introducing bunker suites, a product common at other big league venues. In Phoenix, the ultra-premium spaces, typically underneath the stands with no views to the game, are situated on the arena’s south end. They’re being sold on 10-year terms at an annual cost of $750,000. Those patrons’ seats to watch the game are in the first few rows of the lower bowl.  The Suns released details of the $230 million renovation Thursday evening at the […]

The ’90s to Now

The Phoenix Suns have called Talking Stick Resort Arena home since 1992. (Getty Images) Big renovation plans bringing major league arenas into the iPhone era Arena construction is booming in the big leagues. Most projects are tied to extensive renovations of 1990s-era venues in need of updating aging infrastructure, a refresh of public spaces with improved concourse flow, food halls and digital technology, and new spins on premium seats. NBA and NHL arenas in Cleveland, Philadelphia, Nashville, Phoenix, Raleigh, Indianapolis and Boston are all in the midst of transforming the fan experience and some, like Talking Stick Resort Arena, are spending major dollars to replace mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems. They’re all making adjustments to meet the needs of a younger fan base by creating more social spaces that don’t necessarily focus on the game but provide large group areas, in some cases standing room platforms, to hang out, eat and drink and stay connected to their […]

Southwest: The Hits Just Keep On Coming

McGregor vs. Khabib was among the many UFC events at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. (Getty Images) Vegas is the engine for the Southwest, but other big markets contribute strong results The Southwest is home to some of the country’s busiest venues, owing in large part to the presence of entertainment mecca Las Vegas. Arenas in that audience magnet were among the most prosperous in the region during the past year, attracting large crowds to see a steady parade of boldface names and major stage productions. However, venues in Las Vegas weren’t the only ones in the region generating robust ticket sales. The Pepsi Center in Denver, for instance, sold more than 476,000 tickets, grossing more than $41 million through 48 shows, and Talking Stick Resort Arena in Phoenix topped 300,000 tickets and $30 million for its 28 shows. The latter has improvements on tap: Planned $230 million renovations for […]

Dubbed a “Las Vegas-style nightclub,” Track Club will open in the former home to the DeSoto Central Market, a food hall, and is a collaboration between Phoenix developer Chuckie Duff of EQ Properties and Rattle & Rum cocktails’ Damon Scott. The project is being built by Alexander Building Co. and designed by CCBG Architects. “I’m really excited for our fans and it’s a long overdue thing in my […]

Sources: Phoenix Suns Pick HOK, Okland

Talking Stick Resort Arena has been home to the NBA’s Phoenix Suns since it opened in 1992. (Courtesy Talking Stick Resort Arena) Firms will design and build $230 million in upgrades The NBA’s Phoenix Suns have selected HOK and Okland to design and build $230 million in upgrades to Talking Stick Resort Arena, sources familiar with the decision said. In an email, Ralph Marchetta, the Suns’ senior vice president of ticket operations and general manager for sports and entertainment services, would not confirm the selections. “We have not entered into a contract and closed procurement yet,” Marchetta said. The agreements with HOK and Okland are separate contracts. Okland will serve as construction manager at risk, sources said. The general contractor filled a similar role for the $125 million renovation to Vivint Smart Home Arena in Salt Lake City, home of the NBA’s Utah Jazz. HOK most recently designed $183 million […]
