MLS Returns to Venue Roots in Charlotte

(Don Muret / Staff) Expansion team will play in NFL stadium rather than build new CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Major League Soccer on Tuesday officially announced that its 30th franchise will start play in North Carolina’s biggest market in 2021. A raucous crowd, energized by supporters groups chanting and beating drums, cheered MLS Commissioner Don Garber, team owner David Tepper and Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles as they made the announcement at the Mint Museum Uptown. Tepper, owner of the Carolina Panthers, has reportedly committed to paying a league-record $325 million expansion fee after a fast-track process for a club to play in Bank of America Stadium, which will undergo a retrofit to accommodate the sport. The number of years and financial terms were not disclosed. In the NFL, founding partners typically sign 10-year deals valued in the low to mid-seven figures annually, depending on the market and the scope of the agreement. At MetLife Stadium, which opened in 2010 as the home of the New York Jets and Giants, the four cornerstone partners initially signed deals valued at $8 million annually for contracts extending four to six years, according to sources familiar with those negotiations. Bolton Takes GM Post in Palm Springs

He’ll fill arena role for OVG much like the one he had at BOK Center Oak View Group has hired John Bolton as general manager of the new arena under development in Palm Springs, Calif. Bolton, a 33-year facility operations veteran, will also serve as OVG’s senior vice president of entertainment, helping to book events across the firm’s roster of venues. The 10,000-seat Palm Springs arena is the future home of an American Hockey League team that will be the top affiliate of the NHL Seattle expansion team. Officials are set to break ground in February, and the $250 million venue is scheduled for completion in fall 2021. The new arena is a partnership between OVG and the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians. (OVG owns VenuesNow.) Naming-Rights Extension Includes New VIP Lounge

(Courtesy BancorpSouth Arena and Conference Center) BancorpSouth’s new 12-year deal keeps name on Tupelo arena and conference center The naming-rights extension for BancorpSouth Arena and Conference Center covers a new VIP hospitality space at the arena, said Todd Hunt, executive director of the Tupelo, Miss., facility. In October, officials broke ground on $15 million in upgrades to the 26-year-old complex, which includes the new club, updated restrooms and an additional 15,000 square feet of meeting space in the conference center, plus a total makeover of the existing building.  BancorpSouth, whose headquarters are in Tupelo, recently signed a 12-year, $4.25 million extension to keep its name on the complex and brand the new 200-capacity club. Longtime Populous Marketer Stingley Leaving Firm

Gina Stingley is leaving Populous to form a marketing consultancy. (Courtesy Populous) In addition to stadium projects, she helped execute rebrand from HOK Sport in 2009 Gina Stingley, a marketing principal with Populous who helped steer the sports industry’s biggest architect through a strategic rebrand in 2009, is leaving the Kansas City firm at the end of the year to launch a marketing consultancy. Stingley spent 15 years at Populous and most recently served as the company’s marketing strategy director. She started working at the old HOK Sport in media relations and over the years evolved into bigger roles in marketing and brand management.  Over that time, Stingley was involved in about 30 big league arena and stadium projects with a total value of several billion dollars.
