Aluminum Cups Shine in Drive to Recycle More

(Courtesy AMB Sports & Entertainment) Some venues move from plastic to a product less likely to end up in trash The push to achieve zero waste at sports and entertainment facilities has multiple venues replacing single-use plastic cups with aluminum drink containers, and the early results have caught officials by surprise. Fans are taking stacks of the recyclable cups home as souvenirs, and some are selling them on eBay for $40 to $50, according to early adopters. It’s all good, though. Ballpark Village Getting Three New Tenants

Sports & Social sports bar and restaurant will take the first floor of a building, beneath Onelife Fitness. (Courtesy St. Louis Cardinals) Expanding St. Louis complex to add Sports & Social, Davio’s Northern Italian Steakhouse, Baseballism Ballpark Village, the retail and entertainment district across the street from Busch Stadium in St. Louis, is expanding. Sports bar Sports & Social, Davio’s Northern Italian Steakhouse and apparel retailer Baseballism are part of the $300 million second phase for the development.  The announcement on the three tenants is being made today.  Ballpark Village is a partnership between Major League Baseball’s St. Louis Cardinals and The Cordish Cos., a Baltimore developer that specializes in building mixed-use districts linked to sports facilities. Sports & Social is Cordish’s proprietary brand for a high-end sports bar, restaurant and live music venue. First Concert Announced for Globe Life Field

Work continues on Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, set to open next year. (Courtesy Texas Rangers) Chris Stapleton, Willie Nelson to play Rangers’ new home March 14 Chris Stapleton and Willie Nelson will christen new Globe Life Field on March 14 with a concert at the Texas Rangers’ new ballpark. The show, promoted by Live Nation is the first public event at the $1.2 billion stadium in Arlington. Supporting acts are Jamey Johnson and Yola. The Rangers announced the concert today. Globe Life Field, a retractable-roof stadium with artificial turf designed by HKS, marks a new standard for concert production, according to project officials. It’s the first MLB venue to feature a retractable pitcher’s mound to be removed for on-field shows, which allows artists to seat the entire floor and extend the production from center field to home plate. Populous Names Miller Managing Director for Americas

Bruce Miller now oversees nine offices for Populous, including its newest in Dallas. (Courtesy Populous) He replaces Earl Santee, who’ll take more active design role Populous has named Bruce Miller its managing director of the Americas, a new role in which he will focus on expanding the sports architect’s practice across North America and South America.  Miller, a senior principal at Populous and a designer with 30 years of experience, replaces Earl Santee as managing director. The position is officially a two-year term, although Santee held the title over the past five years.  Santee, a founder and senior principal, was the firm’s first managing director. He now assumes a more active role for designing sports venues with an emphasis on Major League Baseball, which is his speciality. (Courtesy HNTB) MLS team looks to provide variety of options at new stadium Major League Soccer’s second generation of soccer-specific stadiums in Columbus, Ohio, will introduce some new premium seat products to the league and get back to the basics of roof canopy design, project architects said. The Columbus Crew, co-owned by the Haslam family, owner of the NFL’s Cleveland Browns, and orthopedic surgeon Pete Edwards, the Crew’s former team doctor, broke ground last week on a $300 million stadium on the west end of the Arena District.  Designed by HNTB, the new facility replaces Mapfre Stadium, the league’s first soccer-specific facility and the Crew’s home since 1999.
